<image:title>Articles - Health and Hygiene - As you know, Jiu Jitsu is a contact sport that involves grabbing and holding your opponent. It's important to ensure that no one leaves class looking like they've been in a fight with a tiger. Please remember to trim your nails! We always keep a pair of nail clippers behind the desk. So, if you hop in the car and realize your fingernails are curling over the steering wheel, don't worry! We've got you covered.</image:title>

<image:title>Articles - Health and Hygiene - Below, we'll cover some common health and safety practices we expect all our students to follow. Of course, there are many more things in your daily routine that contribute to maintaining good hygiene, but these are just a few of the common ones we encounter. Let's keep it clean and safe for everyone!</image:title>

<image:title>Articles - Health and Hygiene - Hair gel and other sticky products will mix with your sweat and transfer to your training partners. Make sure to remove them before class. The same goes for makeup—during Jiu Jitsu, it will inevitably transfer to your partner's brand-new white uniform, and they definitely won't appreciate it.</image:title>

<image:title>Articles - Understanding the Belt System - Several factors are considered when your instructor determines if you're deserving of the next belt. A common misconception is that you deserve your promotion just for showing up—WRONG! Promotions are earned, never given. Here are the main things your professor or coach is looking for:</image:title>
<image:caption>1. Attendance. While promotions aren't solely based on attendance, you can't earn them without showing up. Make an effort to attend class at least twice per week. This rate allows you to retain information, not miss important techniques, stay in shape, and ultimately show your commitment to the art. If you can only make it in once every week or two, that's okay! you should still be welcomed with open arms and have a great time, just understand that your progression will naturally be slower. 2. Attitude. You can show up every day but if your attitude sucks, you'll be a white belt forever. If you read our previous article, "Tips for Beginners" we touched on good mindsets to have to make your overall experience a good one. These will also play a role in your promotions, it’s important for your development in the sport to be coachable, practice humility, and show respect to your training partners and instructors. 3. Improvement Are your skills developing? We will never compare one student to another as a basis for promotion, but we will compare you to your former self. Are you better than you were yesterday, last week, or last month? If you maintain good attendance and approach each class with a positive mindset, you will improve and earn those next promotions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Understanding the Belt System - Adult System: White belt through Brown Belt You can receive a maximum of 4 stripes on each belt, each one marking incremental progress towards the next belt. Once you receive your Black Belt, Degrees take significantly longer to acquire. Here are the minimum years for each degree at Black Belt:</image:title>
<image:caption>1st Degree: 3 Years — Total Years: 3 2ns Degree: 3 Years — Total Years: 6 3rd Degree: 3 Years — Total Years: 9 4th Degree: 5 Years — Total Years: 14 5th Degree: 5 Years — Total Years: 19 6th Degree: 5 Years — Total Years: 24 7th Degree: 7 Years — Total Years: 31 After receiving your 7th degree on your black belt, your next promotion will be the Black/Red Belt. <image:title>Articles - Understanding the Belt System - Adult Belt System, Youth Belt System, and where they meet.</image:title>
<image:caption>Adult Belt System: The adult belt system is relatively straightforward, consisting of seven different ranks. Below, I'll list each belt, the average time spent at each level, and the minimum age requirements. Keep in mind that each academy operates differently, so the time frames to achieve each belt may vary, but the color system remains the same. So, if you see that I have one year at the white belt and you were a white belt for five years, relax—we're discussing averages, and you might be an outlier.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nobody likes a know it all, especially when they don't know it all. Humility allows you to accept feedback, learn from others, and recognize that there's always room for improvement. If your ego doesn't allow you to be vulnerable, you wont grow. The ceiling is low for someone who isn't willing to acknowledge and address their shortcomings, in Jiu Jitsu and in life. Try remaining open to new techniques and perspectives from the instructors and higher ranks in your school.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Tips for Beginners - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Progress in Jiu Jitsu takes time. Be patient with yourself and understand that setbacks and plateaus are part of the process. Mastering techniques while building mental and physical strength doesn't happen overnight. I've been training Jiu Jitsu for nearly 16 years and I'm still adjusting techniques I've been doing since year one. Perseverance through challenges and setbacks is essential for growth. By pushing through tough times, you build resilience, improve your skills, and unlock your true greatness. Don't let temporary difficulties stop you from achieving long-term success.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Tips for Beginners - Don't try to run before you know how to walk. That fancy move you saw on Instagram, don't do it. At the very least, consult your instructor to make sure its safe so you don't hurt your training partners. Mastering the basics in Jiu Jitsu is crucial before moving on to advanced techniques. The fundamentals provide a solid foundation, ensuring that you understand the core principles and movements. This foundation helps prevent injuries and allows you to execute advanced techniques more effectively. Without a strong grasp of the basics, advanced moves can be overwhelming and less effective. By focusing on the fundamentals first, you build the necessary skills and confidence to progress safely and successfully in your Jiu Jitsu journey.</image:title>

<image:caption>We understand that embarking on a Jiu Jitsu journey can be challenging for your child. This sport comes with its fair share of difficulties, setbacks, and plateaus. It's important to recognize that these struggles and the emotions that come with them are completely normal. It's okay for your child to feel overwhelmed at times, and it's not uncommon for them to cry—not from injury, but from learning how to deal with contact and aggression. As parents, your support and encouragement are crucial in helping your child navigate these challenges.</image:caption>
